Evidence-based practice of clinical nursing handover: a scoping review

Abstract: Objective To explore the research status of evidence-based practice of nursing handover, the quality of the evidence, research methods and research content, and to provide reference for similar research in the future. Methods Computer searches were performed in 11 domestic and foreign databases including CNKI, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, CBM, Chinese Medical Journal Full-text Database, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, JBI, and CINAHL. The retrieval time spanned from the inception to January 18, 2024. The included literature was summarized and analyzed using Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review research method. Results A total of 22 articles were included. They were all published in 2012-2023, and 13 in 2019 and later. Two articles provided detailed search strategies, two evaluated methodological quality, and none of the 22 articles evaluated the availability of evidence. All the articles constructed comprehensive evidence implementation strategies, and 15 used diverse indicators to evaluate the effects. Conclusion The number of research on evidence-based practice of nursing handover shows an upward trend, but the quality of the evidence and research methods based on it still need to be strengthened.
