Abstract: Objective To compare the application value of Morse Fall Scale and Stay Independent Brochure Questionnaire in fall risk assessment among the elderly in nursing homes, and to provide theoretical guidance for identifying the elderly with higher fall risk. Methods A convenient sampling method was used to investigate 429 elderly people in 8 nursing homes in Hebei with general information questionnaire, Morse Scale of Falls and Stay Independent Brochure Questionnaire. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, optimal cut-off value, cross check accuracy and positive likelihood ratio of the MFS and STEADI were analyzed. Results Taking the fall history in the past one year as the reference, the areas under the ROC curve for MFS and STEADI were 0.889 and 0.832 respectively; the difference of area under the ROC curve between MFS and STEADI was 0.057(Z=2.295, P=0.022) and the best cut off points for MFS and STEADI were 57.500 and 5.500 respectively. The sensitivity, specific, cross check accuracy and positive likelihood ratio was 0.783, 0.912, 0.751, 8.870 and 0.767, 0.719, 0.739 and 2.730 respectively. Conclusion MFS is more suitable for evaluating fall risk in the elderly in nursing homes when compared with STEADI.
