Current Status of Professional Identity of Newly-graduated Male Nurses in Guizhou Province

Abstract: Objective To investigate the professional identity of newly-graduated male nurses in Guizhou Province and analyze its influencing factors, so as to provide a basis for the management of male nurses. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among 140 male nurses who graduated from 4 nursing colleges in guizhou province in 2017 and are currently working in hospitals, using general data questionnaire and Nurse Professional Identity Scale. Results The total score of the professional identity scale of nurses was 4.95±1.52, and the scores of each dimension ranking from high to low were as follows: sense of self-efficacy, sense of control, sense of significance, sense of patient influence, sense of consistency, sense of self-determination, and sense of organizational influence. Factors such as voluntary choice of nursing major, department preference, career intention, satisfaction with current salary, working environment and department humanistic care had statistically significant influence on professional identity score of newly-graduated male nurses (P<0.05). Conclusion Professional identity of newly-graduated male nurses in Guizhou Province is in a mediate or above level, which needs to be improved. Whether choosing the nursing major and the department voluntarily, career plan, working environment, salary and humanistic care of the department have an impact on professional identity of newly-graduated male nurses.
