Nursing Challenge of Most Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients and Its Strategies: A 12-case Study

Abstract: Objective To summarize the difficulties in the nursing of 12 most critically ill COVID-19 patients and its nursing strategies. Methods There were difficulties including nursing assessment, nursing observation, nursing procedure and isolation and prevention of nosocomial infection in the nursing of 12 most critically ill COVID-19 patients from 28 January to 23 February 2020 and corresponding measures were taken as followed: assessment of body temperature, blood oxygen saturation of fingertip, blood pressure and heart rate; recording of fluid balance, application of TCM and observation of drug-use; aspiration of sputum, CRRT and ECMO and isolation and prevention. Results Of all the 12 patients, one discharged; 5 transmitted; one died and 5 still underwent treatment, 2 of which were most critically ill and 3 improved after the treatment. Conclusion There are difficulties in the nursing of most critically ill COVID-19 patients and different measures should be taken. More attention should go to details and difficulties in nursing procedure, which is conducive to the recovery of the patients.
