Coping mechanism of adolescents with emotional disorders resulting from school bullying: a qualitative study

Abstract: Objective To investigate the coping strategies of adolescents with emotional disorders resulting from school bullying and to explore its reasons, and to provide theoretical basis for developing intervention measures. Methods A purposive sampling method was employed to select 12 adolescents admitted to the Huai'an Mental Health Center due to emotional disorders caused by school bullying from March to May 2023 and a semi-structured interview was conducted. The interview data were analyzed and categorized using Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Results Four themes were extracted: taking non-suicidal self-harm to alleviate negative emotions, immersing oneself online to escape real-life issues, concealing experiences of bullying to maintain self-esteem, and practicing social avoidance as self-protective strategy. Conclusion Adolescent, when confronted with school bullying, often resort to a range of negative coping mechanisms, such as self-harm, avoidance, and concealment. It is advisable for schools, families, and healthcare institutions to take early interventions to effectively address emotional distress resulting from school bullying and mitigating the physical and psychological harm they experience.
