Abstract: Objective To investigate the level of hope of middle-aged cancer patients and analyze its influence factors. Methods Totally 308 cases of middle-aged cancer patients in 2 oncology hospitals and 2 tertiary Grade A hospitals in Hunan Province were investigated by the general information questionnaire, Herth Hope Index and Cancer Coping Modes Questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the influence factors. Results The total score of the level of hope of middle-aged cancer patients was 35.66±3.68, showing a medium level of hope. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that confrontation, resignation, occupation and education background were the principal influence factors (P<0.01). Conclusion The total score of the level of hope of middle-aged cancer patients is at a medium level. For less-educated patients and those unemployed, disease-related health education and care and support are needed. Clear recognition on the relationship of coping style with the level of hope and the recognition on the value of hope for patients are critical for nursing staff. Psychological guidance according to the characteristics of the patients is significant to help patients take positive coping styles to improve their hope level.
