Best Evidence Summary for Light Avoidance Management of Photodynamic Therapy in Patients with Cholangiocarcinoma

Abstract: Objective To summarize the best evidence on light avoidance management of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in patients with cholangiocarcinoma, and to provide reference for clinical practice. Methods Literature on light avoidance management of PDT in patients with cholangiocarcinoma was searched according to the 6S hierarchy of evidence-based resources in guideline websites, database and related professional association websites from the inception to August 2022. Two researchers evaluated the quality of the included literature, extracted and integrated the evidence. Results Twelve articles were found, including 2 clinical decisions, 4 guidelines, 1 expert consensus, 2 systematic reviews, 2 randomized controlled trials, and 1 cohort study. Twenty-eight pieces of best evidence were integrated into 7 dimensions, including indications and contraindications for cholangiocarcinoma patients undergoing PDT, nursing care of photosensitizer administration, light-proof methods, complication management, dietary guidance, psychological care, and health education. Conclusion This study contributes to providing evidence-based standardized management in patients undergoing PDT for healthcare providers. It is suggested the best evidence should be applied after environment assessment and willingness of participants, thus to ensure patient safety.
