Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of parenting self-efficacy between social support and post-discharge coping difficulty in mothers of preterm infants. Methods With convenience sampling, 251 mothers of preterm infants were selected as participants from five hospitals in Shandong Province from March to May 2023. Social Support Rating Scale, Parenting Sense of Competence Scale-Efficacy Subscale and Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale were used to conduct an investigation among the mothers. Results The score of social support, parenting self-efficacy and post-discharge coping difficulty in mothers of preterm infants was 42.64±7.47, 34.82±7.10 and 3.73±1.79 respectively. Social support was positively related with parenting self-efficacy (r=0.331, P<0.001), but negatively with post-discharge coping difficulty (r=-0.412, P<0.001). Parenting self-efficacy was negatively related with post-discharge coping difficulty (r=-0.409, P<0.001). Parenting self-efficacy mediated the relationship between social support and post-discharge coping difficulty, with a mediation effect value of -0.101, which accounted for 24.51% of the total effect. Conclusion Post-discharge coping difficulty of mothers of preterm infants are generally at a medium low level, and parenting self-efficacy mediates the relationship between social support and post-discharge coping difficulty.
