Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of kinesiophobia between self-efficacy and early functional exercise compliance in school-age children with limb fractures. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study. A total of 225 school-age children with limb fractures who underwent surgical treatment in the Department of Orthopedics, Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital from October 2023 to March 2024 were selected as the research objects by convenient sampling. The General Information Questionnaire, Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, General Self-Efficacy Scale and Early Functional Exercise Compliance Scale were used to conduct the survey. The relationship among kinesiophobia, self-efficacy and early functional exercise compliance was analyzed. Results The total scores of early functional exercise compliance, self-efficacy and kinesiophobia were 16.69±3.06, 27.13±4.22 and 41.12±5.27 respectively. Pearson correlation analysis showed that self-efficacy was positively correlated with functional exercise compliance (r=0.442, P<0.01); Kinesiophobia was negatively correlated with self-efficacy and functional exercise compliance (r=-0.381, -0.581, P<0.01). Mediating effect analysis showed that kinesiophobia played a partial mediating role between self-efficacy and early functional exercise compliance, with an effect value of 0.133, and the mediating effect accounted for 41.43%. Conclusion Kinesiophobia is the mediating variable between self-efficacy and early functional exercise compliance. Clinical medical staff can reduce children’s exercise fear by enhancing their self-efficacy, and improve their compliance of early functional exercise after surgery.

Key words: kinesiophobia, self-efficacy, limb fractures, compliance with early functional exercise, mediating effect
