Abstract: Objective To explore the affective interaction between dementia patients and their relative caregivers, and to provide reference for grounded theory-based intervention. Methods Grounded theory was applied in the study. Patients with slight and mild dementia and their relative caregivers were selected as group subject, and the data were collected by observation method and interviews, and were analyzed by open coding, axical coding and selective coding. Results Sixteen group subjects were included in the study and 53 first-level, 5 second-level, and 2 third-level codes were collected. The affective interaction could be divided into breakdown phase (affection imbalance, groping and isolation) and re-establishment phase (affection adaptation and blending). Conclusion Relative caregivers should play a dominated role in affective interaction with dementia patients to improve the quality of task-based interaction and affective interaction.
