Competency characteristics of public health nurses: a qualitative study

Abstract: Objective To explore the competency characteristics of public health nurses in China, and to provide reference for the training of public health nurses in the future. Methods Purposive sampling was used to select 17 community nurses and 15 public health doctors from 10 community health service centers in Beijing for the survey, and the data were analyzed by content analysis. Results Four themes of knowledge, skills, abilities and professional quality and 25 sub-themes were extracted. Conclusion The competency of public health nurses covers four aspects of knowledge, skills, ability and professional quality, which provides reference for the future training of public health nurses in China.
