Best Evidence Summary for Management of Long-term Oxygen Therapy in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract: Objective To search, select and integrate the best evidence of long-term oxygen therapy management for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to provide reference for clinical practice. Methods We searched BMJ best practice, Up To Date, JBI Library, System Abstract Database, American National Guidelines Database, Ontario Registered Nurses Association of Canada, Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, International Guidelines Collaboration Group, British National Health and Clinical Optimization Research Institute Library, Australian Guidelines Network, Clinical System Improvement Association, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Global Initiative, American Thoracic Association, British Thoracic Association, Irish Thoracic Society,Australian and New Zealand Thoracic Society,Yimaitong Clinical Guidelines Network, Cochrane Library, EMbase, CINAHL,PubMed, Wanfang, CNKI, VIP and CBM to collect evidence on long-term oxygen therapy for COPD patients including guidelines, expert consensus, best practices, systematic reviews, evidence summary and randomized controlled studies.Two researchers independently evaluated the quality of the literature, combined with the judgment of professionals, and extracted the literature that met the inclusion criteria. Results Twenty articles were selected,including 2 clinical decisions, 4 evidence summaries, 8 guidelines, 1 systematic review,3 expert consensuses and 2 randomized controlled trials. Totally 27 pieces of best evidence in 8 categories of definition of long-term oxygen therapy, multidisciplinary team, indications for application, basic requirements and selection of oxygen therapy equipment, implementation, dynamic assessment and monitoring, health education and discharge follow-up were summarized. Conclusion This study summarizes the best evidence of long-term oxygen therapy management for COPD patients, provides evidence-based basis for standardized clinical care programs, and improves patient outcomeand the quality of care.
