Abstract: Objective To investigate the attitudes toward life-sustaining treatment in citizens and explore its influencing factors. Methods From June 2018 to January 2019, with a cross-sectional survey method, 932 Wuhan adult citizens were investigated by a general information questionnaire and Life-sustaining Treatment Questionnaire. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors. Results Among the 932 citizens, 600(64.4%) had heard of life-sustaining treatment and 842 (90.3%) rejected it in case that they were seriously ill or in a coma. Binary logistic regression analysis showed citizens without terminal illness (OR=2.153, P<0.001) tended to accept life-sustaining treatment, while those with advanced age (50~59 years: OR=0.472, P=0.028; ≥60 years: OR=0.402, P=0.013), with education background of junior college or above (OR=0.526, P=0.009) and terminal illness (OR=0.542, P=0.037) tended to reject it. Conclusion In the study, 64.4% have heard of life-sustaining treatment and 90.3% tend to reject it among 932 citizens. Age, educational background and whether suffering terminal illness are the major factors influencing attitudes to life-sustaining treatment. Education on the limitations of life-sustaining treatment should be strengthened to help citizens understand its essence so to make rational choices and improve the quality of life.
