Abstract: Objective To understand the influence of different menstrual period on premenstrual symptoms and coping styles in female nursing students with and to provide scientific basis for health care in medical university. Methods Through stratified cluster random sampling, 1,061 female nursing students in 3 medical universities were recruited and investigated by using general information questionnaire, Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) and Menstrual Coping Styles Scale. The data was analyzed using SPSS 19.0. Results The MDQ score of female nursing students in normal menstruation group was the lowest, and the difference was statistically significant when compared with that in the prolonged menstruation group (P<0.05). After further analysis of 6 different fields of MDQ, it was concluded that female nursing students in normal menstruation group had the lowest scores in the 3 dimensions of decreased attention, autonomic nervous system response and water and sodium retention, and the differences were statistically significant when compared with those in the prolonged menstruation group (all P<0.05). Female nursing students in normal menstruation group had the lowest scores in general management and positive cognition of menstrual coping style, and the differences were statistically significant when compared with those in the shortened menstruation group and the prolonged menstruation group (all P<0.05). Conclusion Female nursing students in abnormal menstruation group have severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, and they could actively seek help in the face of physical discomfort caused by menstruation, and adopt positive coping methods to alleviate their discomfort. Targeted health guidance is recommended for female nursing students.
