Construction of core competency index system of dementia care workers

Abstract: Objective To construct a core competency index system for dementia care workers, and to provide theoretical support for the development and evaluation of training programs for dementia care workers. Methods The items of core competency index system were identified after literature review, and behavioral event interview with 20 dementia care workers and the initial index system was established after group discussions. Two rounds of consultation were conducted with Delphi method from July to September 2021 involving 25 senior experts from 21 healthcare organizations including tertiary grade-A hospitals, medical colleges and nursing homes. Results The core competency index system for dementia care workers consisted of three first-level items (theoretical knowledge, professional skills and comprehensive quality), and 12 secondary-level and 48 third-level items. The response rate of the two rounds of consultation was 100% and 88% respectively; expert authority coefficient 0.926 and 0.898 respectively, and expert coordination coefficient 0.182 and 0.188, respectively, which were statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion The core competency index system for dementia care workers shows good validity and reliability. It can be used as a reference for the selection, assessment and training of dementia care workers.
