Status Quo of Fear of Progression in Spouses of Advanced Cancer Patients and Its Correlation Factors

Abstract: Objective To investigate the status of fear of progression (FoP among spouses of advance cancer patients and analyze its influencing factors. Methods With convenient sampling method, 120 spouses of advanced cancer patients treated in tertiary grade A cancer hospital in Tianjin were surveyed by using a self-designed general information questionnaire, Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF , Herth Hope Index( HHI and Coping Modes Questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression was used to analyze the factors influencing the FoP in the spouse of advanced cancer patients. Results The FoP score of spouses of advance cancer patients was 39.87±8.52; the total score and the scores of the dimensions of the FoP of spouses are negatively correlated with the hope level and positively correlated with the negative coping style. Multiple regression analysis showed that the infuencing factors of level of FoP in the spouses of advanced cancer patients were age, self-care abilit of the patients, the level of hope and negative coping style(P<0.05. Conclusion There is great FoP in spouses of patients with advanced cancer. Medical personnel should pay attention to the psychological status of the spouses and take effective measurses to promote their physical and mental health. More social support, positive coping style and improved level of hope will benefit alleviating the fear of spouses of cancer patients.
