Abstract: Objective To develop a scale of ethical dilemma for nurses in major infectious disease emergencies and test its reliability and validity. Methods Based on the principles of nursing ethics, the initial scale was formed by literature review, interview and expert consultation. A total of 842 nurses involved in major infectious disease emergencies in tertiary general hospitals in 6 provinces and cities were investigated for reliability and validity test. Results The ethical dilemma scale for nurses in major infectious disease emergencies consisted of 27 items in 4 dimensions. The overall content validity of the scale was 0.914, and the content validity of each item ranged from 0.833 to 1.000. Four common factors were extracted by exploratory factor analysis, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 69.636%. The total Cronbach α coefficient of the scale was 0.929, and the half-folded reliability was 0.866. The Cronbach α coefficient of each dimension ranged from 0.800 to 0.907, and the overall test-retest reliability of the scale was 0.943. Conclusion The scale has good reliability and validity, and can effectively evaluate the level of nurses’ ethical dilemma in major infectious disease emergencies.

Key words: major infectious disease emergency, nurses at the front line, ethical dilemma, reliability, validity
