Translation of Regret Coping Scale for Health-care Professionals and Its Reliability and Validity in Nursing Interns

Abstract: Objective To translate the regret coping scale for health-care professionals (RCS-HCP) into Chinese and test its reliability and validity in nursing interns. Methods RCS-HCP was translated based on Brislin translation model and cross-cultural adaptation, expert review and pre-survey were performed successively. A total of 295 nursing undergraduates and 234 nursing postgraduates from September 2021 to August 2022 were selected by convenience sampling method to test the reliability and validity of the scale. Results The Chinese version of RCS-HCP consisted of 3 dimensions, involving 14 items after 1 item was removed. All item-level content validity index was 1.000, and the scale-level content validity index was also 1.000. Exploratory factor analysis extracted 3 common factors, accounting for 72.25% of the cumulative contribution of variance. Confirmatory factor analysis suggested that the model fitted well (χ2/df=2.309, RMSEA=0.075, GFI=0.911, CFI=0.955, TLI=0.940, IFI=0.955, NFI=0.924). The average variance extracted of each dimension were 0.464, 0.521 and 0.685, respectively, and composite reliability was 0.775, 0.844 and 0.915, respectively. The square root of average variance extracted ranged from 0.681 to 0.828, which were greater than the absolute value of the correlation coefficient (r=0.406~0.584,P<0.01) among the dimensions. The total score of the RCS-HCP and the score of each dimension of nursing postgraduates were significantly higher than those of nursing undergraduates (t=2.468~3.568,P<0.05). The Cronbach’s α coefficient of the total scale and each dimension were 0.905,0.827,0.876 and 0.918 respectively. The split-half reliability was 0.847, 0.849, 0.792 and 0.863 respectively, and the test-retest reliability coefficient 0.909, 0.813, 0.787 and 0.767 respectively. Conclusion The Chinese version of RCS-HCP is reliable and valid, which can be used as an instrument for assessing the coping strategies among nursing interns in China.
