Development of Supportive Care Need Scale for cancer patients with PICC and its reliability and validity

Abstract: Objective To develop a Supportive Care Need Scale for Cancer Patients with PICC,and to test its reliability and validity. Methods Under the theoretical framework of supportive care needs, after literature review and qualitative interview, the draft of the scale was developed by using Delphi method and preliminary survey. A total of 277 cancer patients with PICC discharged from 3 tertiary grade-A hospitals in Zhejiang province were selected as subjects. The reliability and validity of the scale were tested. Results The final scale included the following 6 dimensions: physiological need, psychological need, information need, emotional need, social need, and practical need, involving 29 items. The content validity index was 0.931,and the content validity indexes of each items ranged from 0.875 to 1.000. Exploratory factor analysis（EFA）extracted 6 factors,whose cumulative contribution of variance accounted for 68.194%; confirmatory factor analysis showed that the scale factor structure was stable. The Cronbach α coefficient of the total scale was 0.926, and the Cronbach α coefficient of each dimension 0.716~0.903. The split reliability coefficient of the scale was 0.788, and the split reliability coefficient of each dimension was 0.716~0.915. The total score of the developed scale and the score of each dimension were positively correlated with total score of SCNS-SF34 and the score of each dimension（P<0.001）. Conclusion Supportive Care Needs Scale for Cancer Patients with PICC has good reliability and validity. The scale can be used as a tool to evaluate supportive care needs of cancer patients with PICC.
