Breast Reconstruction Decision-making Experience in Elderly Patients with Breast Cancer: A Qualitative Study

Abstract: Objective To understand the decision-making process of breast reconstruction surgery in elderly breast cancer patients in China. Methods The purposeful sampling method was used to select breast cancer patients who were treated in a tertiary grade-A hospital in Tianjin from April 2021 to May 2022 for semi-structured interviews. Clolaizzi 7-step analysis method was used to analyze the data, and the themes were described. Results Four themes were extracted: the pain of inner perception; the dilemma of decision making; motivation for decision-making; and expectation of decision-making support. Conclusion This study deeply explores the breast reconstruction decision-making experience of elderly breast cancer patients in China, and provides reference for providing targeted decision-making interventions for elderly breast cancer patients.
