Qualitative Study on Working Experience of ICU Nurses in Context of Human-machine Interaction

Abstract: Objective To deeply understand the working experience of ICU nurses when performing human-machine interaction, and to provide reference for promoting deep integration of emerging technology and the development of nursing specialty. Methods With descriptive phenomenological approach, 14 ICU nurses from 4 tertiary grade-A hospitals in Shanghai were selected for semi-structured interviews from December 2019 to October 2020, and the obtained data was analyzed by Colaizzi 7-step analysis. Results Four themes are extracted: resistance and curiosity of initial attempts; advantage recognition of human-machine interaction; stress of unexpected events, and effective coping with human-machine interaction. Conclusion Nurses generally recognize the advantages of the popularization of human-machine interaction, but they should pay attention to emotional reactions in unexpected events and adopt positive and effective coping style.
