Development of Professional Death Avoidance Scale for ICU Nurses and Its Reliability and Validity

Abstract: Objective To develop a professional death avoidance scale for ICU nurses in line with China's national condition, and test its reliability and validity. Methods Based on Papadatou's professional death avoidance research of medical staff, combined with semi-structured interviews, literature review and nurse group discussions, the initial item pool of the scale was formed; the draft of the scale was determined by expert evaluation and pre-investigation. A total of 389 valid questionnaires were collected from ICU nurses in Guangdong Province via Wenjuanxing platform. Results The professional death avoidance scale for ICU nurses consisted of 1 dimension and 15 items, with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 61.669%. Confirmatory factor analysis suggested that the model fitted well (χ2/df=2.884, RMSEA=0.099, CFI=0.929, TLI=0.914, IFI=0.929, NFI=0.896). The average variance extracted was 0.561, and composite reliability 0.950. Item-level content validity index ranged from 0.800 to 1.000, and the scale-level content validity index was 0.933. The Cronbach α coefficient of the scale was 0.953 and Spearman-Brown split-half reliability coefficient 0.963. Conclusion The professional death avoidance scale for ICU nurses (PDAS-IN) has good reliability and validity, which can be used to measure ICU nurses' professional death avoidance.
