Effect of Protective Motivation Theory-based Nursing Intervention on Self-care Ability of Elderly Patients with Chronic Diseases

Abstract: Objective To investigate the current status of self-care ability of elderly patients with chronic diseases and to explore the effect of nursing intervention based on protective motivation theory on their self-care ability. Methods Convenience sampling method was used to select 93 elderly patients with chronic diseases in our hospital from February 2018 to July 2019, and nursing intervention was carried out based on the protection motivation theory. The score of self-care ability and self-management behavior before nursing intervention, 1 month, 3 and 6 months after intervention was compared using self-care ability measurement scale. Results Self-care ability of 82%（76/93）and self-management behavior of 77% (71/93) of the patients’ were in a low and medium level. The comparison in self-care ability and self-management behavior of patients before, 1 month, 3 and 6 months after intervention indicated statistical significance（F=51.736,P<0.001;F=43.265,P<0.001）With the prolonging of the time, self-care ability and self-management behavior of elderly patients with chronic diseases were effectively improved (P<0.001). Conclusion Self-care ability and self-management behaviorof elderly patients with chronic diseases is in a low level. Nursing intervention based on protection motivation theory can improve self-care ability and self-management behavior of patients, which is conducive to the prognosis of patients.
