Sexual Experience of Breast Cancer Patients: A Qualitative Meta-synthesis

Abstract: Objective To systematically evaluate qualitative studies on sexual life experience of breast cancer patients. Methods We searched qualitative studies on sexual experience of breast cancer patients from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang and VIP from the inception to December 2018. The literature was evaluated according to the Quality Evaluation Standards of JBI Evidence-Based Health Care Center (2016), and then results were integrated. Results A total of 10 studies were included and 44 research results were extracted to form 7 new categories and 3 integrated results were obtained including serious influence of breast cancer and its treatment on patients' sexual physiology and psychology and intimate relationship with their partners; the importance of sexual life and active measures to cope with sexual distress and inadequate sexual cognition and desire to acquire sexual health knowledge. Conclusion Medical staff should pay attention to sexual life experience of breast cancer patients, provide sexual health education to improve their sexual cognition level and their sexual rehabilitation.
