Abstract: Objective To explore the current status of empathy of midwives and analyze its influence factors. Methods Snowball sampling was used to select respondents. The survey was conducted from March to May 2019, and 297 midwives from more than 80 hospitals in 25 provinces and cities in China were surveyed on the internet by using a self-designed general information questionnaire and the Chinese version of Jefferson Scale of Empathy-HP. Results The total score of empathy for midwives was 113.90±13.13, with a scoring rate of 81.36%. Dimensions with scoring rate ranking from high to low were perspective taking 82.36%, compassionate care 80.64%, and standing in the patient's shoes 79.67%. The empathy scores of midwives participating in the training were higher than those not, midwives who were satisfied with their jobs had higher empathy than those not(P<0.05). Conclusion Midwives' empathy is in a mediate or above level, with the highest score in the dimension of perspective taking and the lowest of standing in the patient's shoes. Empathy training and measures to promote nurses' satisfaction with their jobs are important to improve nurses' empathy.
