Mediating Effect of Negative Coping Style between Stress and Mobile Phone Dependence in Nursing Undergraduates

Abstract: Objective To describe the status of nursing undergraduates' mobile phone dependence, to explore the association among stress, coping style and mobile phone dependence in them, and to provide reference for the education and mental intervention for nursing students. Methods The stratified cluster sampling method was used in this study and 1,774 nursing undergraduates of 3 colleges and universities in Shaanxi Province were assessed by using the Mobile Phone Addiction Index Scale (MPAI), the Stress Scale for College Student (SSCS), the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) and a self-designed general information questionnaire. Results The average score of the Stress Scale for College Student, negative coping style, and the Mobile Phone Addiction Index Scale for nursing undergraduates was 44.75±10.35,1.14±0.53 and 44.77±10.99 respectively. The MPAI score was positively correlated with the scores of stress and negative coping style (β=0.299, β=0.143; P<0.01). Structural equations model found that negative coping style played mediating role between stress and mobile phone dependence(β=0.028,P<0.01). Conclusion There is close relationship among stress, negative coping style and mobile phone dependence,and stress can indirectly affect the mobile phone dependence through negative coping style. Nursing educators and managers should take various ways to help students alleviate pressure, and guide them to adopt more positive coping styles, thus to reduce their dependence on mobile phone.
