Experience of readiness for discharge of family caregivers of children with liver transplantation: a qualitative study

Abstract: Objective To understand the experience of readiness for discharge of family caregivers of children with liver transplantation, to provide reference for the development of the discharge planning for children with liver transplantation and for the improvement of nursing system for children with liver transplantation in China. Methods We employed a phenomenological method in this study. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 14 family caregivers of children with liver transplantation from a tertiary grade-A hospital in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Semi-structured interviews with the caregivers were conducted and Colaizzi 7-step analysis was used to sort out the data. Results Four themes were extracted, including the differences of discharge decision-making experience, the complexity of discharge emotional experience, the perception of poor discharge coping ability and insufficient coping resources, and the demand for home care support after discharge. Conclusion Nurses should proactively assess the readiness for discharge of family caregivers of children who have undergone liver transplantation and provide them with assistance in preparing for the transition from hospital to home care including psychological support, knowledge sharing, skill development, and emotional support, so as to ensure a safe transition for the family caregivers of these children.
