Quality evaluation and content analysis of guidelines of physical activity for pregnant women

Abstract: Objective To access the quality and analyze the content of foreign guidelines of physical activity during pregnancy, and to provide reference for the formation of recommendations and guidelines on physical activity during pregnancy in China. Methods Guidelines for women's physical activity during pregnancy published on websites and included in databases were retrieved. Two researchers extracted data independently, and two evaluators accessed the guidelines independently. Content analysis was used to summarize the guidance and recommendations. Results Ten guidelines were collected, including 3 expert consensuses and 7 evidence-based guidelines. Among the evidence-based guidelines, 3 were grade-A ones and 4 grade-B. The average standardized scores of the 6 fields of AGREE Ⅱ were as follows: scope and purpose (92%), clarity (81%), participants (81%), independence (73%), application (68%), and rigor (61%). The ICC scores of all guidelines were>0.75. Content analysis summarized 7 aspects of applicable objects, contraindications, activity prescriptions, and activity examples, activity warning signals, activity precautions and special pregnant women's activity strategies. Conclusion The guidelines on physical activity of pregnant women are of high quality and comprehensive in content, which can provide reference for the formation of recommendations and guidelines on physical activity of pregnant women in China. However, when referring to the contents of foreign guidelines, the recommended contents should be specifically analyzed according to the physical quality, and cultural background of pregnant women and social environment in China.
