Qualitative Study on Humanistic Care Experience of Home-based Caregivers for Elderly People

Abstract: Objective To explore the humanistic care experience of home-based caregivers for elderly people in Suzhou. Methods From August to September 2019, with descriptive phenomenological research method, the observation was conducted and a semi-structure interview was carried out in 10 home-based caregivers in Gusu District Home Care Service Center of Suzhou, and the obtained data were sorted out, analyzed and refined. Results Six themes were extractedlack of comprehensive understanding of humanistic care; home-based caring behavior; home-based non-caring behavior; sensitivity to elderly care; caring feedback and career sense of achievement and inadequate humanistic care training. Conclusion The cultivation of caregivers’ humanistic care awareness and competence, identification of home-based humanistic care behavior and norms to promote the development of humanistic care, and integrated humanistic care with nursing practice are beneficial to improving the quality of home care, and enhancing the elderly’s sense of well-being.
