Characteristics of Australia Respite Care and Its Inspiration

Abstract: Objective To review the origin and development of Australia';s respite service, to discuss its policies and regulations and identify its main characteristics, and provide reference for improving respite service system and ensuring the sustainable development of home care in China. Methods The characteristics of Australia';s respite service were summarized after reviewing its historical development and the reform of China';s respite service system was proposed after the comparison of respite care between China and Australia. Results Australia';s respite service demonstrated the following characteristics:(1) complete policies and regulations, and services with laws to follow; (2) clear government responsibilities leading service implementation; (3) diversified service forms focusing on service quality; (4) service guarantee norms for service implementation. Conclusion It is still in its infancy for respite care in China. It is recommended to learn from Australia';s experience and improve the respite service system through measures such as multiple forces, improved service policies, standardized service systems, diversified service forms, and service guarantees to support the sustainable development of home care.
